Toby Lewis was born in the East Midlands and returned to the area with his young family when appointed as Chief Executive of City and Sandwell Hospitals in April 2013. Educated at Oxford and London universities, his academic background is in psychology and leadership, and he completed the Top Manager’s Programme with the King’s Fund, as well as executive education on improving quality in healthcare systems at Harvard. In addition to leading a £450m, 7500 employee, organisation, he chairs the Clinical Research Network Partnership Board for the West Midlands, serves in two health and wellbeing boards with Local Authorities, and is one of two CEO representatives on the regional clinical senate oversight group. These roles reflect an abiding career interest in preventative medicine, research and innovation, and in clinical leadership. Since 2013 the Trust, under Toby’s leadership, has been praised by Public Health England for its work on population health and the health and wellbeing of employees. It has also secured investment to develop a three year leadership programme, and has published a long term research strategy, linked to local primary care. Toby is Chair of the University’s Audit Committee.
