The Student Experience

The University’s commitments to its students are clearly articulated in its Student Charter, along with an explanation of what is expected from students.  The Charter is promoted to new and returning students. 

The University’s commitment to rigour, respect and responsibility impacts directly on the student experience: from the need for transparency and fairness in recruitment and selection through to the commitment of the University to providing a curriculum that is academically rigorous and relevant to society, incorporating specific modules on ethics where appropriate. The University encourages, supports and enables students to develop as independent and active learners, who can also provide inclusive leadership, support and mentoring to others.

The University has a duty of care for all students and has a responsibility for their academic and personal welfare. We support the right of our students to be involved in Students’ Union activities and we encourage students and Union representatives to enter into dialogue with us on Aston’s ethical stance, policies and procedures. We expect students to maintain high standards of personal and academic behaviour during the course of their studies and their lives at Aston.

Aston will ensure the provision of appropriate support for students including academic supervision, counselling, career education guidance and financial support for cases of genuine hardship.

Both the University and the Students’ Union ensure that ethical issues feature strongly in guidance policies and provision of welfare and support. Resources and facilities underpinning this commitment include professional student advisors in the Advice and Representation Centre (ARC) and the Hub, a dedicated Disability and Additional Needs Unit, a Counselling Service, and a team of Chaplains in the Martin Luther King Multi-faith Centre.
