Course: BSc in Computing Science with Professional Placement

Graduation year: 2018

Current job and organisation: Front End Engineer, ITV

Why did you choose Aston University?

Aston offered a high quality course with a professional placement, exactly what I was looking for. And located in the centre of Birmingham it provided a very diverse and exciting student life.

What did you enjoy about your course?

My favourite part of the course was the professional placement, I got to apply what I learnt to a real world problem. From day one I was making a difference both to the employer and the end customer.

What else did you get involved in while you were here?

I was involved in a number of societies but the one that stands out the most to me was the Mountaineering Society. Being afraid of heights and having never done climbing before I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I got to meet some amazing people and make friend for life - plus I got over my fear of heights and still climb to this day.

What did you like about living in Birmingham?

Birmingham was absolutely brilliant. It’s an exciting and lively city, where there’s always something to do!

What did you do immediately after you graduated?

Immediately after graduating, I went on a climbing holiday before starting my first job as a software engineer.

What is your current job (position and organisation)?

I currently work as a front-end engineer for ITV - working on delivering exciting new features to the ITV Hub and help shape the future of online streaming through the launch of ITVX.

What do you enjoy about it?

The best part of ITV are the people - I’ve only started a few months ago but everyone has been super nice and supportive. My job is challenging but rewarding, and being located in the centre of London, it offers a lot of unique opportunities.

What are your career ambitions for the future?

I want to try as many things as I can, and develop a wide range of skills across different industries.

What is special about Aston University?

All the lecturers and staff were professional and supportive. Anytime I needed help there was always someone I could go to - especially during my final year.

What advice would you give to current Aston students?

Enjoy your every moment, don't be afraid to try new things and make the most of it.

What do you miss the most about studying at Aston?

I miss how easy it was to try something new. Whether it was by trying out a taster session for a club or a society or by meeting people across campus, there were a lot of exiting activities to get involved in.

How would you sum up your time at Aston in one word (both in English and your home language!)

Brilliant
