What did you study at Aston University? BSc English Language (single honours with placement)What year did you graduate? 2016What is your current job role? ManagerCompany: Merkle, Periscopix
What would you advise students to do before/after they graduate? I'd definitely recommend speaking to the Careers & Placements team! I had so many doubts and confusions about myoptions (think of the Avenue Q song) and they gave me some greatadvice around what my transferableskills would be applicable for and what careers my particular passions and strengths would be suited to. I'd also recommend getting a head-start on finding accommodation in the city you want to move to after graduation! If you have friends you can stay with or a decent amount saved up ready for the move, all the better... After graduation, it's been all about work for me, but I do sometimes wish I'd had the money / time to do a bit more travel (I was in Japan for my placement) -but honestly, moving to London has been an adventure in and of itself!
What did you do after you graduated (first year after you graduated)? I actually started looking for work in Marketing as soon as I finished writing my dissertation. I was lucky to have a really smooth interview process with Merkle | Periscopix (some of the other companies I applied to were much less friendly/ responsive!). I applied in May and I'd been accepted by the start of June. I had just over a month to find a place in London and relocate ready to start -it was quite intense... I had a really great first year though: the people I moved in with (in theroom in a shared flat I found on spareroom.com) are still my friends today.
What do you enjoy about your current role? I work for a digital marketing agency -which means no two days are the same. I currently lead four key client accounts and manage teams of between three and five per account. In my role, it's my responsibility to work together with clients to develop and deliver their digital strategy across paid search and display channels. We're a very performance-focused company so I spend a lot of my time looking at large data sets and recognising patterns & trends, delivering insights to the clients on a regular basis. It's fascinating stuff and I love being right at the cutting edge of progressions in the industry. The company’s culture is a real bonus and it is genuinely a really great place to work!
What are your career ambitions for the future? When you start at Merkle | Periscopix you'll come in at Junior Associate level within one of our core channels (I've been promoted twice in as many years to reach Senior) andI've actually recently been accepted onto the Manager Training Program. This means I have a growing team for whom I'm responsible (things like career development, quarterly reviews, performance and training). The company has a number of different avenues for development and progression including further specialisation or diversification of your core role. Personally I'm really keen to offer my clients a fuller array of capabilities for their marketing (including Social Networks and wider Display alongside Paid Search) and in this multi-channel capacity I will be aiming to reach Director level in Media Delivery (veryachievable in the next 5 years, given the company's growth trajectory!)
