The new Students’ Union Building
With Aston’s plans to expand student numbers to 13,000 by 2020 and students’ rising expectations of modern, high quality social, welfare and sports services the current building is no longer fit for purpose and will close its doors for the final time in early 2019.
The new purpose built Student Union facility will be located in the heart of the campus, next to the Chancellor’s Lake and in the centre of the Student Residences. The welcoming modern space with a double height entrance hall will hopefully appeal to all students and will be home to over 100 student clubs and societies.
The £10m building will provide flexible socialising and learning spaces, The Advice and Representation Centre which counsels students on issues relating their health, wellbeing and academic studies, provide prayer and meeting rooms as well as a bar, cafe, shop and two large halls for events. The new Union will reposition the Students’ Union as the hub of student campus life.
The new Students’ Union will open its doors in April 2019, and internal layout plans for the new building can be seen here.
