A university degree gives the opportunity to better life chances, employment prospects and networks. At Aston we are creating these opportunities for students from all backgrounds – no other UK university supports students from the lowest socio-economic groups like Aston University.

Despite the perceived disadvantages of Aston’s student intake (43% of our students come from what are considered higher levels of social deprivation), we are successful in helping them to access graduate-level employment and are in the top 25 UK Universities for graduate employability. Demonstrating the social value and significance of Aston University as a vehicle for social mobility.
With over 61% of our students in receipt of a low-income scholarship, your support is vital to ensure we can continue to give every student, no matter what their background, the same chances as previous generations.

Hayward Scholarship Fund

The Hayward Scholarship Fund has been created by one of Aston's most successful graduates to support students and inspire other alumni to follow his example. Dr Tony Hayward (BSc Geology 1974) donated 100 scholarships to Aston over a six year period helping support disadvantaged students gain the full university experience. This donation of £250,000 will be matched by supporters, proving a £500,000 fund to help students through their university years.

“As a financially independent student, the scholarship Aston offered has made it possible for me to go to university."

Bobbi, scholarship recipient
Psychology and Business graduate 2016

Students' Union

Next steps

With over 100 clubs and societies and 1000s of students engaged in activities, the Students' Union requires a new home which will provide a good social-learning space. The new Students' Union will be located right at the heart of campus providing high quality social, welfare and sports services. With more students than ever before living at home and away from campus, this has never been so important. We want all students, no matter what their background, to have the opportunity to be fully immersed in life on campus. You can help give students this opportunity through supporting our scholarship funds and new facilities.

“I think education is so important. It enables people to achieve their dreams. I’m inspired by knowing that my donation could be helping an Aston student who could go on to make a real difference in this world.”

Sue Dilworth
Systems Analysis graduate, 1972
