Ute Stephan is a Professor at Aston Business School and the Director of the Aston Centre for Research into International Entrepreneurship and Business (ACRIEB). Ute is also the Editor-in-Chief of Applied Psychology: An International Review(AP:IR) Previously Ute was at the University of Sheffield’s Institute of Work Psychology, the London School of Economics, the Catholic University Leuven, Belgium and the Universities of Marburg and Dresden in Germany. She holds a PhD in Psychology from the University of Marburg (Germany), is a certified social skills trainer, and worked as a consultant and trainer for private, public and third sector organisations.
Ute’s research focuses on the relationships between culture, institutions and entrepreneurship, both social and commercial entrepreneurship. Other research interests include social innovation, entrepreneurial leadership and motivation. Her work is published in leading journals such as the Journal of Management, Management Science, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice and Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal. She serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Applied Psychology. She is also a member of the editorial review board of the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Business Venturing and Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, the UK Global Entrepreneurship Monitor team and the GLOBE project.

I hold a PhD with distinction in Natural Sciences/Work Psychology from the University of Marburg, Germany and an MSc and BSc in Psychology from the Dresden University of Technology.
Ute has over 10 years’ experience working as a consultant and trainer, both independently for private, public and third sector organisations, as well as for Accenture in Germany and Cirrus Logic in Texas, USA.
I regularly lecture on entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership, and culture. In my approach to teaching, I combine the latest scientific evidence with practical professional experience and seek to engage students through experiential exercises and self-assessments.
At Aston I contribute to the MSc Entrepreneurship & International Business, MSc Strategy & International Business, and MSc International Business.
In addition, I have received scholarships totalling GBP 10,000 from the German Research Foundation, the Georgia Institute of Technology, the Dresden University of Technology, the German Academic Exchange Service and e-fellows (McKinsey & Company, German Telekom AG, and Holtzbrinck publisher group).
Current PhD/DBA students:
I am available to supervise new PhD students who are interested in entrepreneurship and culture, social capital and psychological aspects of entrepreneurship and innovation. There are opportunities for incoming PhD students to be involved in on-going research projects on social entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs as employers.
