Martin is a Senior Lecturer at Aston Law School. His research focuses on behavioural regulation, (financial) consumer law and statutory interpretation. He previously taught at the University of Oxford, the University of Zurich (Switzerland) and the University of Halle (Germany).

Martin regularly submits evidence to proposals and consultations from policymakers in his areas of research, including submissions to the UK Government (Department for Business & Trade), Indian Government (Department of Consumer Affairs), Australian Government (Treasury), the UK House of Commons Public Bill Committee and the UK House of Commons European Scrutiny Committee. Martin’s research was quoted and relied upon in the UK House of Commons European Scrutiny Committee’s Final Report on “Retained EU Law: Where next?”.

Martin's first monograph, The regulation and supervision of advertising in financial market law (in German), received prestigious awards in both Switzerland and Germany. Martin’s second monograph, Judicial law-making in English and German courts, was commended by Philip Sales (Justice of the Supreme Court, United Kingdom) as a “product of considerable scholarship across the two jurisdictions […] As with all the best works of comparative law, one reads this book and learns as much about one’s own legal system as about the system with which it is compared.”

Martin has held visiting research positions at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (London), the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (London), the University of Cambridge, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law (Hamburg) and iCourts at the University of Copenhagen (Denmark).
