Iain joined Aston Business School in 2012 to support the adoption of ‘servitization’ in manufacturing businesses across the West Midlands. Iain is currently Project Director for a new £1.2m, ERDF-funded, TRAN-SIP project (supporting SMEs to adopt servitization) which runs until December 2018. Iain chairs the Advisory Board for the project. Private sector partners on the TRAN-SIP project include Lloyds Bank plc and Trowers & Hamlins LLP. Iain’s role as Director of Strategic Programmes, in The Advanced Services Research Group, involves working with funding agencies to develop new projects and, ultimately, to increase the level of Gross Value Add (GVA) in the manufacturing sector by helping SMEs transform their businesses through the adoption of servitization.
Prior to joining Aston University, Iain was a Senior Consultant at TUV SUD NEL (2008 to 2012) where his work included: technical and financial due diligence on large-scale R&D energy projects for Scottish Enterprise; being a Monitoring Liaison Officer for Innovate UK on energy-related R&D projects; the Project Director of a £600k R&D support service for technology-related SMEs in the East of England.
Prior to TUV SUD NEL, Iain was a member of the Senior Management Team at Business Link York and North Yorkshire (2005 to 2008) where he managed the Development Team (8 staff) and 30 ERDF-funded business support and enterprise projects. Previous positions include: National and European Funding Initiatives Manager at Cranfield University (2002 to 2005); Head of European Funding and Liaison at The Open University (1999 to 2002): Senior Lecturer at Limerick University (1997 to 1999); a variety of engineering roles at the National Engineering Laboratory (NEL) from 1978 to 1997. Iain became a Fellow of the Chartered Management institute (FCMI) in 2008, a Chartered Manager (CMgr) in 2010 and a Chartered Fellow in 2012.

Iain has been actively involved in supporting R&D and innovation activities since 1994. In supporting Professor Baines in his delivery of ‘servitization’, Iain hopes to develop his understanding of the transformation processes required to adopt/implement new business models, to support servitization, and to contribute to the production of research papers to further the research and teaching agenda around servitization in manufacturing companies.
This project, funded by the West Midlands European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), works with manufacturers in the West Midlands that have between 10 and 250 employees, to support and enable them to adopt a services-led business strategy. Manufacturing businesses can access a transformational workshop programme and ongoing industry-led support to help them learn about servitization and overcome barriers to implementing it.
