Our Mission:

The modern world is run by models. Whether your address book or the design of a new warship, whether the data of your clubcard or the structure of the railways timetable, a vast range of human activity especially in a commercial context depends on the quality of the models and the flow of data through these models in order to enable effective decision support. The Systems Modelling and Simulation team is focused on transforming the models used in the systems around into effective tools for the benefit of society and businesses. We analyse systems and business process, we build models and concurrent simulations to test those models, we develop tools to use data, exploit the models and deliver actionable options for organisations around the world. The world, our technologies, and out understanding of our natural and human environment is changing continuously, and so our simulations, models and decision support systems have to adapt.

As a group with a very inter-disciplinary skill set and range of research interests we offer unique opportunities for students to undertake research, for businesses to be provided with advice and consultancy, and for fellow academics to build collaborative projects.

For Students:

As systems become ever more complex, organisations need help in understanding the implications of various policy decisions on the behaviour of the system. We offer a range of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Modules which broadly addresses this challenge including, for example: Knowledge Management, Simulation, IT and Web Development, E-Commerce, ERP, Supply Chain Management and Effective Management Consultancy.

Our teaching is research driven, which has resulted in a number of textbooks by our members, adopted for teaching in a wide range of academic institutions in Europe and North America.

For Academics and Researchers:

Our diverse team of researchers use a varied set of research methods and tools to assist with this challenge. We are active in the following research areas and would welcome proposals from potential PhD candidates in these areas:

In a wide range of application areas, including emergency management and disaster relief, food supply chains, transportation and others, we help industry, government and the third sector to meet the challenges of managing complex systems with multiple stakeholders.
