Aston University and Higgs & Sons to take on second KTP project

Higgs & Sons

West Midlands-based law firm Higgs & Sons is partnering with Aston once more to undertake a second Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP).

The project will enable Higgs to develop a workforce intelligence planning system which will allow staff to maximise their potential and meet their own ambitions, while providing the firm with a sector-leading model for the provision of legal services. The system will help Higgs to ensure that organisational strategies are effectively communicated and embraced throughout the firm.

In the Midlands market, Higgs has become known as “one to watch”. The firm was crowned Birmingham Law Society law firm of the year in 2011, and corporate law firm of the year at the Midlands Insider Dealmakers Awards 2013. The workforce intelligence planning system will allow Higgs to continue this success by creating human resource policies driven by genuine market needs, and the firm will be able to align the personal ambitions of staff with the strategic objectives of the company.

Workforce intelligence planning is still a new and developing field, and this research will advance theory in strategic human resource management in Higgs and its wider enterprise. This project gives Higgs the chance to work with Aston Business School academics Dr. Judy Scully and Professor Pawan Budhwar from the Work and Organisational Psychology group, and Professor Ben Clegg, from the Operations and Information Management group. Dr Judy Scully is leading the partnership, having particular expertise in the area of workforce intelligence planning, as well as extensive experience of working with industry. The team’s collective knowledge will allow Higgs to develop in this area, and the project will also give Aston the opportunity to deliver impact through transferring theory into a real-life business setting.

Joanna Parker of Higgs & Sons said: “After the great success of the first KTP, we are delighted to be working with academics from Aston Business School once more. Their expertise will help in our strategic vision of becoming the law firm of choice in our market.”

Lead academic Dr. Judy Scully said: “Aston has expertise in this developing area, so this project is an excellent opportunity to put theory into practice.”
