THE COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
The Computer Science Department at Aston has an outstanding reputation for delivering applied research, winning over £1.4 million of research funding annually. The department was ranked 4th out of 107 institutions for Graduate Prospects (Complete University Guide 2018), and all BSc (Hons) Computer Science degrees are accredited for Chartered IT Professional (CITP) status – the British Computer Society’s Chartered qualification.
The department currently offers the following taught courses:
Undergraduate
- BSc Computer Science
- BSc Computer Science with Business
- BSc Computer Science and Mathematics
- BSc Computer Science with Multimedia
- BSc Cyber Security
Postgraduate
- MSc Artificial Intelligence
- MSc Computer Science
Due to increasing industry demand to collaborate with our Computer Science department, in 2016, we launched The Computer Science Industry Club: a holistic strategic partnership between industry and academia. Led by Dr Maria Chli, the Industry Club brings students, academics and industry professionals together through a wide range of activities, which focus on three key areas: curriculum development, recruitment, and research.
Mechanical Engineering and Design group
The Mechanical Engineering and Design group at Aston is at the forefront of engineering education employing the modern CDIO (Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate) teaching philosophy.
We run four degree programmes:
- BEng / MEng Mechanical Engineering
- BEng Design Engineering
- BEng Electro-mechanical Engineering
- BSc Product Design, with an emphasis on either Industrial, Transport or Management
Students are exposed to problem-based learning activities from the start of their academic journey requiring them to work in collaborative teams. Students are challenged to Design, Build and Test a series of engineered products using their theoretical knowledge to underpin projects; beginning with an electric kart and wind turbine in the 1st year of study, a medical device and detailed pneumatic system in their 2nd year of study. This philosophy is adopted in the final year project resulting in some consistently outstanding achievements from individual major project outcomes.
With a considerable range of collective knowledge, the combined group’s research interests are cutting edge, diverse and aligned to key themes such as Healthcare and the Environment. Encompassing biomaterials and medical devices, sustainable design, holistic energy management and thermal equipment, smart manufacturing and automation, through to user centred design and enhancing the design of essential products for developing economies.
Due to the increasing demand to collaborate with industry, the Mechanical Engineering and Design group have launched their own Industry Club.
The Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry Department
Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry (CEAC) at Aston has an outstanding reputation, both for high-quality teaching and for research. Our Chemistry courses were ranked 2nd out of 59 institutions for Student Satisfaction (Complete University Guide 2020), and our Chemical Engineering courses were ranked 12th in the UK (Guardian league Table 2020). Both the Institution of Chemical Engineers and the Royal Society of Chemistry have given our programmes full accreditation
The department currently offers the following taught courses:
Undergraduate
- BEng in Chemical Engineering
- BSc in Chemistry
- BSc in Applied Chemistry
Postgraduate
- MEng in Chemical Engineering
The department has an influential culture in delivering applied research, winning over £1M of research funding annually. The most recent Research Excellence Framework, which assesses the research quality in UK higher education has ranked over 60% of the research we submitted as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally recognised’. Notably, in the category of Impact, 100% of our research was classed as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally recognised’. We have an extensive network of industry research collaborators and rank 1st nationally in winning Knowledge Transfer Partnership funding
Due to increasing industry demand to collaborate with our CEAC department, in 2017, we launched The Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry Industry Club: an exclusive partnership program for up to ten companies.
