If you would like to undertake a short study opportunity overseas this summer, a number of partner universities offer Summer School Programmes.

Whilst some of the Summer School programmes listed are non-subject specific, some are focused in the business and management field. Provided the partner university is happy to accept your application, you are welcome to try out a new subject area unrelated to your Aston University degree subject.  Please also read our notes below.

Please note Aston is not involved in the summer school programmes listed below, however each opportunity is linked to one of our exchange partner institutions. With this in mind, we do not hold information on the content or processes involved therefore please refer to the web links provided. If you are unable to find specific information, please contact j.rigby@aston.ac.uk who will email the institution.

CUHK International Summer School

With a well established reputation, the CUHK International Summer School (ISS) is one of the region’s most recognised summer programmes attracting an annual cohort of some 600 international and local students. The ISS provides students with an intensive academic experience and Chinese culture immersion in a multicultural learning environment.

This five-week programme commencing in late June means you can enroll in up to two 3-credit courses. The different areas of study include business, Chinese language, Chinese medicine engineering, environmental studies, humanities and social sciences. An optional Beijing tour allows you to visit major local attractions like the Great Wall of China, Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Olympic Stadiums and Summer Palace.

With a well established reputation, the CUHK International Summer School (ISS) is one of the region’s most recognised summer programmes attracting an annual cohort of some 600 international and local students. The ISS provides students with an intensive academic experience and Chinese culture immersion in a multicultural learning environment.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Programme (SURP) provides an opportunity for international undergraduate students to undertake research attachments for eight weeks at CUHK during the summer. Students will conduct research under the supervision of a CUHK faculty member and earn three credits upon successful completion of the programme.

Hanyang International Summer School (HISS) is one of Korea’s biggest and most popular summer programs. More than 1700 students spend 4 weeks on Korea’s best private university and receive world class education paired with a unique experience of Korean culture.

This program balances academic courses with cultural immersion. Credits can be transferred back to the home university, and students can have a unique experience of Korean culture.

Jinan University Summer Session is hosted by Jinan University. All the courses open in Jinan University Summer Session is credentialed by Registrar’s Office of Jinan University. Program transcript will be issued by Registrar’s Office of Jinan University. 

Jinan University Summer Session offers over 50 courses each summer, in a wide variety of disciplines. Courses are offered in two sessions and two campus,Guangzhou Campus and Shenzhen Campus—the first session usually begins towards the end of July, and all sessions have ended by mid-August. Students from all around the world attend Jinan University in the summer and big portion of students are visitors (non-Jinan University students).

Kanagawa University offers a short-term intensive language program that is open to individuals from countries around the world, twice yearly in summer and winter.

Focusing on Japanese language study, the program’s objective is to improve Japanese proficiency and deepen understanding of both traditional Japanese culture and various aspects of contemporary Japan by taking classes related to Japan, going on field trips and having the opportunity to directly experience the tea ceremony, calligraphy, and so forth. Opportunities to interact with Kanagawa University students have also been incorporated into the program.

Korea University International Summer Campus (KU ISC) provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn about Korea through academic and cultural immersion during the summer months. It offers one semester's load of work condensed into six weeks and four weeks, during which renowned academics teach both domestic and international students. This program is open to current college students who wish to study in Korea but may not be able to do so during the regular academic year. 

KU ISC offers an opportunity for prominent international scholars and students to engage in lively discussions in English. In 2014, 60 distinguished academics from the world's top universities, including Stanford University, University of Cambridge and Cornell University, taught more than 120 courses.

Korea University International Winter Campus (KU IWD) is a five week academic programme which is divided into two separate sessions: Session 1 (3 weeks) and Session 2 (2 weeks). Each student can take either one or both sessions; he/she can take up to two courses for Sessions 1. Session 2 is a culture track (not for credit) which offers exclusive one-day seminars, global corporate visits and various external excursions. 

More then 20 course offerings cover a wide range of subjects pertaining to international issues. with a particular emphasis on Business, Economics, Humanities, Science, Korean Studies and Korean Language. Along with the academic opportunities, the KU IWC provides chances to experience Korean culture outside of the classroom including one-day field trips such as a fun ski trip or K-pop experience.

Nanjing International Youth Exchange Programme (2019 information to be confirmed)

Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu Province in East China - one of the most developed areas in the country. As a world-renowned historic and cultural city, Nanjing boasts its long history and rich resources in S&T, education and transportation with strong economy. The city covers as area of 6,587 square kilometers with a population of nearly 8.3 million.

Starting in 2017, Nanjing International Youth Exchange Programme is sponsored and funded by the Nanjing City Government. In partnership with companies and universities based in Nanjing, the programme highlights internship and exchange activities designed for college students from selected countries, including the USA and the UK. The purpose of the programme is to help foreign college students obtaining personal and in-depth experiences of working and living in China.

Singapore Management University (SMU) is proud to present the Global Summer Programme 2019 – a 4-week intensive programme focusing on Business, Innovation and Society in Asia, offering a suite of elective and enrichment courses designed to augment students' knowledge and practical skills about Asia in general, through the use of real-life case studies and examples.

This Summer Course will deal in detail specifically with the European system for the protection of human rights. Although there are numerous summer courses and other special study programs within Europe on the human rights protection, this course concentrates on an integrated treatment of the various European systems and of specifically European issues of human rights protection, that is, with important matters relevant to over forty European countries with diverse political, economic and social systems.

The subject matter, therefore, includes human rights protection under the regimes of the Council of Europe (the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Social Charta), the European Union and the Organisation for Security and Co -operation in Europe (Helsinki Accords), as well as that on the universal level of public international law.

The Summer School offers three different courses on military, cyber and energy security:

Military: Gives you a chance to get in-depth understanding about current threats the eastern flank of Europe faces and the counter-measures it applies to deter aggressors and defend both - regional and national - security interests.

Barcelona International Summer School

The Universitat Pompeu Fabra is launching the Barcelona International Summer School (BISS) as a flagship programme to advance the curriculum of both domestic and international undergraduate students during the summer term in Barcelona.

Courses are credit-bearing and can be taken in English, Spanish or Catalan in an International classroom environment. They are structured in modules of different duration and intensity, which can be flexibly combined in periods ranging from one to five weeks.

The BISS offers advanced training by building on UPF academic strengths, engaging leading faculty members to feature and share their current research with participating students.

Subjects have been conceived as an invitation to think and learn beyond and across disciplines, while approaching social and scientific challenges from content, methodological and practical perspectives. Independent research projects along these lines can be supervised by UPF scholars in the BISS.
