FAQs for international students

Aston University places a huge importance on equipping students with employability skills, that's why it is embedded into all aspects of the students’ journey.

The Careers+Placements team are dedicated to giving you access to practical experience, and actively encourage you to undertake an integrated year-long placement opportunity.

The placement experience will give you the chance to develop your personal and professional skills, not to mention our students often say that their placement year was their favourite time at university!

Careers+Placements have a team of Placement Coordinators on hand to offer students support with their placement search. However, it's important to recognise that a placement is not guaranteed and gaining one is a competitive process. However, engaging with the support that Careers+Placements offer will give you the best chance of securing your dream placement.

Taking a placement year in the UK will not increase the likelihood of an international student securing a graduate role in the UK. However, we strongly recommend that you take a placement year, either in the UK or overseas, as it gives invaluable work experience to add to your CV, helping you stand out in a competitive job market.

We have a dedicated team who work closely with UK and international employers and partner universities to source and promote placement opportunities to Aston students. We organise employer events and recruitment fairs on campus to bring employers and students closer together. However a placement is not guaranteed. We work in partnership with students and expect students to actively engage with Careers+Placements from their first year to ensure they find a suitable placement. We support students through all the aspects of the research, application, recruitment and pre-departure preparation for the placement year. The support includes a suite of sessions, workshops, one to one appointments, CV checks, mock interviews, employer activities on campus and many other tailored initiatives.

Absolutely, we will support students every step of the way. The support mechanisms we offer students include a suite of sessions, workshops, one to one appointments, CV feedback, mock interviews, employer activities on campus and many other tailored initiatives.

Students who actively engage with Careers+Placements from their first year are more likely to find a placement. It is important to be flexible when looking for a placement, avoiding narrowing the search to one particular location, sector or field. Studying abroad at a reputable English speaking Partner University in the USA, Australia, Europe and beyond, is an attractive placement option for many of our international students.

There is no guarantee that if you have worked in the UK during your placement year, that you will be able to work in the UK after you graduate. However, we still recommend taking a placement year either in the UK or overseas, as it will help to develop professional and transferrable skills valued by employers, for example, team working, communication and problem solving.

The vast majority of our placements are paid, the average salary is £16,000 however this is dependent upon locations and sector.

If you have a Tier 4 visa, you can work full-time in the UK during your placement year. We have a dedicated visa compliance team who are on hand to offer guidance about working regulations.

Our team of friendly and experienced Careers Consultants can help you find your way through your job hunting journey from your first year onwards. The JobShop can help with offering volunteering opportunities with local charities as a source of employability development for your skills. You will also have access to an online jobs portal where you can search for vacancies worldwide and we have a section on our careers webpages specifically for international students. You can carry on accessing careers support up to 3 years after you graduate. We offer Skype or telephone appointments so that you can still access the service from overseas. The Careers+Placements Team are looking at Short Summer Placements as an option for the future.
