One-one and group tutorials with a Teaching Fellow in Learning Development/Learning Advisor

All students can book confidential one-one appointments with our Learning Advisors to develop your understanding of study skills and academic writing.

Whether you are an undergraduate, postgraduate, campus based or distance learner, our advisors can help you improve your study skills and feel more confident with your academic studies.

Appointments can cover a range of topics including:

  • revision and exam strategies
  • understanding assignment questions
  • planning and structuring written assignments
  • referencing
  • critical thinking
  • understanding feedback

Can a group of us attend an appointment?

Yes! If there is a group of you with similar questions from the same course, please let us know when booking your appointment. We will then book your appointment in one of our meeting rooms if necessary and provide you with an extended tutorial.

Please note, the Learning Development Centre is NOT a proofreading service and our advisors do not provide subject specific advice.

What types of appointment are available with Learning Advisors?

  • Face-face appointments in the Learning Development Centre
  • Skype appointments
  • E-tutorials

How long is an appointment?

Appointments are usually 30 minutes but can last up to an hour if required.

Preparing for an appointment:

Some students like to visit our advisors to help plan their assignments, others prepare a list of topics to discuss during an appointment, and others prefer to bring a draft piece or section of writing or feedback to discuss during their appointment.

Our advisors work by talking to you and asking you questions to determine your understanding and to identify how they can help you develop your academic practice.

To get the most from your appointment, we advise you to:

  • Think about what you want to achieve or improve during the tutorial
  • Bring information with you to the appointment – this is usually a sample of your writing, assessment criteria and/or feedback on your writing.
