Do you have what it takes to become a Student Ambassador for Aston University?

Become a Student Ambassador and develop your personal and professional skills whilst boosting your bank balance!

As part of your role, you’ll be working with young people encouraging prospective students to consider studying at Aston University and inspiring school children to consider further education. 

Responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting events such as Open Days, Applicant Visit Days, Conferences, Campus Tours, promotional events, and course interviews
  • Supporting with school visits on campus: workshops, subject taster sessions and engaging talks
  • Supporting various university marketing activities.

You will be on a casual contract allowing your work to remain flexible around your studies, we simply ask that you be available to work at least once over a 3-month period.

Support local students in Years 9 –13 to achieve their academic goals and realise their aspirations, all whilst boosting your CV and employability! 

By becoming a Student Mentor, you will gain essential skills in leadership, and experience with working with young people. This is an excellent development opportunity for those who are looking to expand or diversify the skills and experiences on their CVs and is a great foundation if you are keen to pursue a career working with young people.

Please note, there are 3 different Mentoring Schemes. You can apply to one or all of the Mentoring Schemes if you meet the criteria, but you will be allocated to ONE programme only post-application. The Mentoring Schemes are;

AimHigher Mentoring 23/24

Aston is in partnership with Aimhigher WestMidlands, and as an Aimhigher Mentor, you would be involved as an undergraduate student mentoring students from widening participation backgrounds in local secondary schools for 10 weeks. The focus of the mentoring is to encourage students to break down any barriers that may be preventing them from considering higher education as an option. As a mentor you will provide personal information, advice and guidance on educational and career pathways, you will build important skills, help raise attainment and build aspirations for the future. This is not academic mentoring.

  • 10-week structured programme in a local secondary school
  • 5/6 learners in either Year 9 or Year 10 or group structured sessions 
  • Roughly 2.5 hours per week, half an hour per learner 
  • Set travel pay determined by the programme coordinator (either 0.5 hours pay or 1 hour pay)
  • Full training and DBS check completed 
  • Added to your HEAR record 
  • Scheduled within school working hours in University term time (you won't be expected to work over holidays or the January exam period)
  • Salary is £12.22 per hour
  • Students have to be dedicated to commit to the full 10-week programme
Introduction to Healthcare Academic Mentoring 23/24

Online mentoring in small groups of students via our teaching platform Blackboard Collaborate twice a month from November 2023 to April 2024 (1-hour sessions).

  • There will also be 2 on-campus sessions at the beginning and end of the programme, where you will take part in study skills workshops with your tutees.
  • Expectations to prepare sessions for the students in either Maths or Science GCSE, set homework and create content for you to deliver 
  • Achieved Level 6 / grade B in GCSE Maths and Science
  • Full training and DBS check completed 
  • Added to your HEAR record 
  • Scheduled within University term time (you won't be expected to work over holidays or January exam period)
  • Salary is £12.22 per hour
  • Sessions will take place on Wednesday afternoons during school working hours. Specific dates are to be confirmed with schools in due course. 
  • Students must be able to commit to all dates once advertised (these will be confirmed in May 2023).
Academic Tutoring in either Maths, Biology or Chemistry 23/24

Online mentoring in small groups of students once a month from November 2023 to April 2024 on Wednesday afternoons (4.30pm-6.30pm).

  • Expectations to prepare all mentoring sessions for their A Level Science (either Biology or Chemistry) or A Level Maths, set homework and create content that you deliver during your online sessions
  • Studied Biology or Chemistry for A Level and achieved a grade B or above for the relevant science Streams (equivalent qualifications accepted) 
  • Studied Maths for A Level and achieved a grade of B or above
  • Achieved Level 6 / grade B in GCSE Maths and Science
  • Full training and DBS check completed 
  • Added to your HEAR record 
  • Scheduled within University term time (you won't be expected to work over holidays or January exam period)
  • Salary is £12.22 per hour
  • Students must be able to commit to all dates (these will be confirmed in May 2023)

As part of our employee recruitment processes, Aston University uses an umbrella body called First Advantage (FADV) Online Disclosures to process and interpret the results of DBS applications. First Advantage provides a comprehensive DBS service with full UK coverage, including Disclosure Scotland DBS checking service. 

If you are successfully recruited as a Student Mentor, HR will arrange for you to have access to an online application via a simple and easy-to-use online portal that links to the DBS.  HR will communicate the results of your check through the online portal. This will then be stored electronically on your Core Employee Record for the period that the DBS is required. The DBS certificate will be sent directly to your home address by DBS.
