Recruitment for our Mentoring in Schools programme is not currently open.

Aston University's Mentoring in Schools programme aims to raise local school pupils’ aspirations, attainment and awareness of further and higher education.  Our various mentoring schemes are focused around aspiration raising, subject specific support and academic coaching.

The schemes involve undergraduate students mentoring pupils in local secondary schools on a one-to-one or small group basis. Mentors provide support and encouragement to learners as they encounter the various transition milestones between Year 9 and Year 13.

Mentors act as positive role models who work with pupils to:

  • Increase confidence, motivation, persistence and self-esteem
  • Raise aspirations
  • Improve organisation and study skills
  • Outline and implement learning action plans
  • Raise awareness of higher education opportunities
  • Improve academic attainment & performance
  • Aimhigher picture

Mentors have recent experience of the education system themselves and can relate to the problems and barriers pupils may face when considering Higher Education as an option.  They can offer advice and support, and provide pupils with a real insight into university life.

We currently have 4 different mentoring schemes: 

  • Aimhigher Mentoring - general aspiration-raising mentoring for Year 9-13 pupils
  • Aimhigher Plus Mentoring  - targeted group mentoring to raise aspiration, motivation and attainment with Year 9 & 12 students
  • APP (Aston Progression Pathway) Mentoring - STEM-based mentoring for Year 12 pupils
  • GCSE Tutoring - Maths or English tutoring for Year 11 pupils

We recruit a new cohort of Mentors each academic year. As this is a competitive and paid role, the application process will involve an application form, an interview, completion of a DBS check and two days of training.
