Starting university is a big step. It can take time to settle into your new life and it’s normal in this period of transition to experience a wide range of conflicting emotions from excitement to fear.
Here at the Counselling and Mental Wellbeing Service, our qualified counsellors/psychotherapy practitioners and those in training are here to support you. Whether you are just embarking on your life at university or you are further along with your academic studies, we can help you work through the issues that are troubling you.
This may be your first time away from home and family and friends. It may be the first time that you have had to live independently and take care of yourself, managing daily tasks including being responsible for your own finances, shopping, washing and cooking. At the same time, you are adjusting to living in a new place, meeting new people and trying to make friends as well as doing your best to attend lectures and stay on top of the demands of academic life.
Counselling/psychotherapy sessions can give you a safe, confidential space to explore what is happening in your life. You will be respected and not judged. Your counsellor/psychotherapy practitioners will listen to you, help you gain greater clarity about your problems and help you work out how to move forward.
At a time of significant change in your life, doing even the simplest of tasks or making what used to feel like straightforward decisions can suddenly feel overwhelming. Settling into university life is not turning out as you’d hoped or expected and you begin to wonder what is happening to you. Equally, at any point in your time at university an unexpected event like the break-up of a relationship or problems at home can throw you off track affecting your ability to concentrate on your studies.
Counselling and Mental Wellbeing staff are experienced in supporting students with a wide range of issues including anxiety, academic stress, low mood and depression, relationship difficulties, and bereavement. We offer a range of counselling approaches, including Person Centred, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Solution Focused Brief Therapy. The work undertaken by the Counselling and Mental Wellbeing staff is time-sensitive, (i.e. we will not keep you in counselling for longer than you need), brief counselling, which is particularly suitable for students. You will be signposted to self-help resources and referred to further specialist services should you need them.
We also provide workshops on a range of issues relevant to students, and act as a point of reference within the University for those who have concerns about the well-being of students.
Our Mental Health Specialist, (who is a Registered Mental Health Nurse), co-ordinates specialist support for students with longer term mental health conditions, and assists in crisis situations during working hours.
The Counselling and Mental Wellbeing Team is based in Room G21 on the upper ground floor, Main Building, opposite the IT Helpdesk. We have a small waiting area just inside our door for clients with appointments.
