Based around a maths poster competition, the maths Mentoring Scheme is where second year, final year and MSc mathematics students assist first year mathematics undergraduates to obtain an understanding of their studies.
Typically, in the first 8 weeks of the first term, all first year mathematics students will be invited to work in small groups (e.g. four members per group), assisted by a leader (i.e. a second year, final year or MSc maths student), to prepare and present a poster on a mathematical topic, involving an oral (10 minute presentation) and a written report (500 words). The theme of the mathematical topic will be agreed by the students and group leaders and will be inspired via an industrial visit.
During week 9 there will be a showcase event, where all groups will give a 10 minute presentation on their mathematical topic as well as a chance to showcase their written report and posters in an exhibition style layout.
