International Foundation Years

The International Foundation Year, as the name suggests, provides a thorough grounding in the fundamental subjects necessary for you to become a respected and successful engineer or applied scientist.  You will study mathematics, physics and learn how to get the most out of your studies.  Engineering covers a wide range of disciplines and a unique feature of our programmes is the opportunity for you to have a ‘taste’ of mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, electronic engineering, computer science and biology in semester 1.  These ‘tasters’ will enable you to make an informed decision as to which career in engineering you would like to follow.  In the second semester, you will study the discipline you chose at the end of the first semester in greater depth to prepare you for your degree studies.

Many students who come to the International Foundation Programme lack confidence in their abilities to be successful at Mathematics and Physics.  Aston University provides a very supportive environment to all students, but in particular our Learning Development Centre provides additional help to International Foundation Year students in terms of extra sessions in mathematics and physics led by experienced tutors.

In addition to equipping you to be successful in engineering or applied science, the International Foundation Year will also help you to enhance your English language skills so that you are fully prepared to meet the demands of studying for a degree here at Aston University.

The long term global demand for engineers and applied scientists is high and career prospects are excellent. Our International Foundation Year gives you the opportunity to become a professional engineer or applied scientist  by thoroughly preparing you to study on our high quality degree courses. Our world faces many crisis such as global warming, food shortages, water shortages etc and it is universally recognised that the people who are able to solve these problems are engineers and scientists.  So if you want to make a difference come and join us at Aston University.
