A very warm welcome to the Computer Science Group (CS) of the School of Informatics and Digital Engineering, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS) at Aston University. We hope that your time as a postgraduate here will be stimulating, rewarding and enjoyable.
Our aim is to help you to succeed in your chosen MSc programme, MSc Artificial Intelligence (with Professional Practice), MSc Artificial Intelligence with Business Strategy (with Professional Practice), MSc Applied Artificial Intelligence or MSc Computer Science (with Professional Practice). Your programme is designed to be challenging and with a view to help you develop the technical and transferable skills you need in your future career. Your success will depend to a large extent on a strong personal commitment: the onus is on you to succeed – it is essential that you fully participate in all scheduled classes (i.e. lectures, tutorials, laboratory classes, etc), and that you engage with coursework throughout the academic year. It is also important to prepare for your coursework and other assessments soon after you receive it and get them done on time (not rushing it towards the submission deadline. Don't forget that your tutors are also here to help you. Should you need further help with your learning, please do not hesitate to book an appointment with them either via email or using our online appointment booking system (WASS). The big difference between students who achieve all they are looking for and those who don’t often comes down to effective time management, organisation and not being afraid of asking questions.
Should problems of any type arise you should seek help: if the problem is of an administrative nature, for example, finding directions, timetable difficulties, etc. you should make enquiries at the Reception Desk of the EPS College Centre in MB133 on the 1st floor of the Main Building, or email the College’s Reception at firstname.lastname@example.org. Our Postgraduate Programme Administration Team is also here to help you. Simply email them at email@example.com. For more academic issues, e.g. guidance on academic options, long-term illness, etc. you should contact your programme director.
The purpose of this Handbook is to provide you with some essential information that you will require. Of course, the Handbook cannot tell you everything you need to know, but each year we try to make it better without making it unwieldy. If the information you need isn’t in these pages, please do not hesitate to ask!
Finally, we look forward to meeting you and wish you success in your studies here at Aston.
