EBRI leads and delivers a range of research projects and collaborations with partners in the West Midlands, UK, Europe and beyond. Projects focus on the adoption of bioenergy and energy systems technologies in both urban and rural settings and the provision of support to businesses, organisations and local authorities to enable them to make informed bioenergy decisions.

We are highly experienced in leading and developing projects, bidding for funding and have an ever-expanding network of domestic and international partners from both business and academia. We welcome opportunities for collaboration in the UK and beyond. Below are details of EBRI's current projects:

European Union funded

  • BRISK2
    Biofuel research infrastructure - providing researchers with transnational access to biomass conversion facilities across the project's network of 15 European partners. Applications now open.

  • AMBITION
    Research collaboration tackling the ongoing challenges of energy system flexibility, developing key unit operations in biomass pre-treatment, gasification, gas cleaning and conditioning, as well as evaluating the feasibility of biofuel integration in today's energy system.

  • ABC-Salt 
    A four-year platform funded by Horizon 2020 that will validate at laboratory scale a novel route to produce sustainable liquid biofuels (middle distillates) from various lignocellulosic waste streams for the transport industry.

  • Green Carbon
    Engineering thermochemical processes to produce bespoke biomass derived carbons and low cost carbon materials, creating sustainable pathways to innovative green technologies and providing research opportunities for Early Stage Researchers. 

  • EBRI Business Investment in Research
    An EU European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) programme providing practical support to small and medium sized enterprises in the West Midlands to help them develop new products and services from waste material, ranging from unwanted food to redundant car tyres.

UK funded  

  • EPSRC and BBSRC Supergen Bioenergy Hub
    Bringing together industry, academia and other stakeholders to focus on the research and knowledge challenges associated with increasing the contribution of UK bioenergy.

  • VIGIL
    The aim of this project is to develop a new communication and control platform for Vehicle-to-Grid/Building (V2G/V2B) systems: an off-vehicle system that controls how, when and the rate at which electric vehicle batteries are charged and discharged with respect to local substation constraints and building energy requirements.

Industry funded

We are currently working with SMEs through to multi-national companies on research for their organisation. As each piece of research is bespoke to the organisation, it is subject to confidentiality agreements. International research

  • GB3Net
    The Global Bioenergy, Biofuels and Biorefining network (GB3 -Net) comprises an international team of leading scientists and engineers from the UK, US, Brazil and China, with expertise spanning different biomass processing technologies across renewable energy and chemicals.

Projects completed

  • EnergyHarvest
    Helping to tackle the problem of open field buring in India by utilising the harvest residues for bioenergy using a mobile pyrolysis unit that cane be transported by tractor. 

  • Leverhulme - Royal Society Africa Award Sustainable Biofuel Production from Ghanaian and Tanzanian Oil Seed Crops.
    Building research capacity within the Universities of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and the University of Ghana in the development of heterogeneous catalysts for clean technologies and the sustainable utilisation of waste oil seed derived biomass in biorefining.

  • EPSRC Nanoengineered Materials for Clean Catalytic Technologies
    Recent advances in chemical synthesis and analysis now offer an unprecedented opportunity to sculpt the atomic structure of solid catalysts and to peer inside their microscopic workings. This Leadership Fellowship explores the integration of new experimental and theoretical breakthroughs to develop next-generation nanoengineered materials for the clean production of valuable chemical feedstocks and sustainable biofuels.

  • EPSRC PyroAD
    Increasing the energy yield from the integration of anaerobic digestion (AD) and pyrolysis.

  • EPSRC Solar fuels via engineering innovation
    Addressing the design of innovative photoreactors for efficient hydrocarbon conversion and separation from CO2 for solar fuel production. This will be achieved via an integrated approach between chemical engineers and chemists to intensify the process of CO2 photoreduction through reactor innovation, and thus, provide alternative future energy options.

  • EPSRC Selective photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to olefins: a feasibility study
    Developing novel photocatalysts critical to achieving the selective photoreduction of CO2 to olefins, providing underpinning science for the integration of nanostructured inorganic photocatalysts with the exceptional light-harvesting properties of biological pigments, inside novel solar photoreactors for maximum process intensification of CO2 PCR to olefins.

  • ReShip

    This project focuses on developing a sustainable biofuel made from Norwegian forest wood waste which could help transform the shipping industry and reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Photo-catalytic materials for the destruction of recalcitrant organic industrial waste (PCATDES) 
    Exploring the development of UV-LED photo reactors for the photocatalytic destruction of organic contaminated water from Palm and Olive oil mill effluent. A collaboration with partners from the UK Germany, Spain, Turkey, Madrid, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand and seeks to develop a prototype reactor for deployment in South East Asia.

  • Itheca
    Demonstrating the role of localised energy systems in supporting the traditional energy system through demand side grid management and the potential of vehicle to grid (V2G) infrastructure in supporting intelligent localised energy systems.

  • PYROCHEM (MSCA-IF project)

    Tracking the fate of carbon-13 within fast pyrolysis with stable isotope labelled plant materials currently provided by IsoLife. A collaboration with French partners for the development of an experimental and theoretical mechanistic investigation.

  • Pyrogas
    Integrating intermediate pyrolysis and vapour gasification to create an effective and efficient biomass-to-energy system for combined heat and power.

  • BAM (Biorefinery Advisory Model)
    The objective of this project is to provide a web-based, user driven, flexible and robust biorefinery modelling system for the Networks in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy (NIBB) network.

  • BioenNW                                                                                                                                                    Delivering Local Bioenergy to North West Europe.

  • BRISK                                                                                                                                                        Biofuels Research Infrastructure for Sharing Knowledge. The project is now running as BRISK2 - see here for more information.

  • ECOFUEL
    EU-China Cooperation for Liquid Fuels from Biomass Pyrolysis.

  • PyNE
    Accelerating the rate of implementation and success of fast pyrolysis for fuels and chemicals.
