Our vision

The overall objective of the project is, through a programme of laboratory and demonstration scale testing, to fully integrate intermediate pyrolysis and gasification stages to form the complete PYROGAS concept from feedstock to delivery of power and heat, and to demonstrate its successful operation on a range of feed stocks, this enabling the PYROGAS concept to find widespread commercial application.

Our aim

The scientific and technical objectives:

  • The optimisation of operating parameters for different feedstocks and the characterisation of their product streams in terms of vapour, gas and bio-char compositions and mass fractions, to define integration parameters.

  • The development and optimisation of the pyrolysis vapour gasification process through process configuration, vapour feed system, operating conditions, catalyst characteristics, and gas clean up systems.

  • The increased understanding of the characteristics of the PyroformerTM  process required for adaptation to run coupled to a catalytic vapour gasifier, andidentification of preferred catalyst types against tar loadings from different feed stocks so as to be able to provide an optimum product for a vapour or liquid application.

 The knowledge transfer objectives:

  • Expert input to the work programme - The secondees from the developers will be able to provide detailed information on design and operation, and suggest informed solutions to specific problems encountered.

  • Development of EBRI’s industrial focus. EBRI is a new research institute which aspires to become a leader in industrially focused bioenergy research. Therefore at this early stage in its life it is considered essential to develop close interactions with industrial entities. These will enhance EBRI’s ability to secure future interactions with industry.

  • New researcher training. Research students are strongly encouraged to develop their awareness of and involvement with industry, particularly in the early years of their degree programmes. This programme provides an opportunity for such students to work with secondees from industry and to be seconded to the companies themselves.
