Who we are

AiPT is one of the largest photonics research centres in the UK, with 90+ staff and current grant funding amounting to £25.5M in 60 national and international, research and industrial projects. AiPT’s success has been built on significant achievements in all aspects of light-based Information and Communication Technology including:

  • Transmission of data via high-speed optical fibre systems, 5G wireless links, and opticalsignal processing.
  • Acquisition of data via bio- and medical photonics and various fibre-optic sensing applications.
  • Device technologies including fibre gratings, nonlinear photonics, femtosecond laser.
  • Material processing, optoelectronics, THz technology, nano-photonics, and fibre lasers.

AiPT has an impressive portfolio of industrial and international collaborations, spin-out companies, highly cited papers and patents, all demonstrating excellence in the field. AiPT maintains active and fertile collaborations with over 100 industrial companies ranging from start-ups and SMEs through to major corporations such as Airbus, Infinera, Thales, BAE, Nokia Bell Labs, and Huawei.

AiPT has academic partnerships and collaborations with more than 80 major photonics centres and laboratories worldwide.

Mission

The mission of the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies is through research integrated with education to generate and advance knowledge and innovation in photonics and translate the scientific breakthroughs into technology making industrial, economic and societal impact.

Vision

Through growth and consolidation of the current leading position and expansion of our capability, by 2020 the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies will be a centre of excellence in photonics, with global international visibility, reputation as a trailblazer in research and innovation, strong industrial links and knowledge transfer, several strategic industrial partnerships, and a beacon of photonic learning and public outreach activities, ranked among the top academic photonic centres in the world.

Aims

Based on our vision and mission, we aim to expand our research, translational and outreach activities through attracting world leading academics, talented young researchers and students, the development of world class laboratory facilities commensurate with AiPT growth, building sustainable financial operational model, establishing the Aston Photonics Education Centre, and joining efforts with the other groups at the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Aston Business School and School of Life & Health Sciences in creating the Aston Impact Acceleration Centre.

The Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies will be developing guided by the four interconnected strategic goals: research, post-graduate education, translational activities and public outreach.

Research and Funding

AiPT integrates research with education to generate and advance knowledge in photonics and to translate scientific breakthroughs into technology with industrial, economic and societal impact. AiPT is recognised as a centre of excellence in photonics, with global international visibility, and is a beacon of photonic learning and public outreach activities. It is ranked among the to academic photonic centres in the world.

AiPT provides outstanding facilities and infrastructure for its key research and training activities, with extensive theoretical and computational support.

Now housed in a complex developed in 2018, AiPT benefits from 30 laboratories covering 1500 square metres. Facilities include Gbit/s to multi Tbit/s communications testbeds, UV and fs laser systems for optical device fabrication, a Class 10,000 (locally 1000) cleanroom, environmental test chambers, and a range of other equipment for laser and sensing system development.

Activities in support of UK, EU and international partners are funded via cohort-based training activities, Early Career (Erasmus EMJMD programmes SMARTNET and PIXNET, COFUND, ETN and EID projects), and Established Career (individual fellowships) Researcher development, international collaborative projects (Horizon 2020), industrial outreach (European Strategic Investment Fund), blue sky and applied research (EPSRC, Leverhulme Trust), and direct industry contracts.

AiPT has valuable experience in formulating successful funding proposals, and supervising and administering a diverse range of projects covering research, industrial collaboration and training. It has a strong record of mentoring PhD students, with a 99% PhD degree award rate and more than 160 PhDs supplied to academia, research centres, and industry over the last 27 years.

Our People

The Aston University Research Institute of Photonics has a world-leading academic and research team working on photonics research and technology development.

It also has a professional team in place to ensure photonic opportunities can be realised by business, industry, organisations and local authorities.
