A team of the AIPT researchers led by Dr Stelios Sygletos under the guidance of Professor Sergei Turitsyn and Professor Keith Blow have been awarded two prestigious Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) projects - integrated masters programmes, jointly delivered by an international consortium of top level higher education institutions.

  • Smart Telecom and Sensing Networks (SMARTNET).  Total budget 4,076m Euro, Aston part ~ 1.6M Euro. Coordinated by AIPT (Dr. S. Sygletos, Dr. S. Sergeyev, Dr. M. Sorokina, Prof. S. Turitsyn) and including Université Paris-Saclay (Telecom SudParis and Telecom ParisTech) and University of Athens aims at the education of MSc students in the inter-disciplinary fields of photonic and 5G wireless technologies for data communication, sensing and big data processing. Industrial partners of SMARTNET include Airbus, Alcatel-Lucent, Orange, Network Rail, Coriant (former Siemens Optical Networks) and 13 other large companies and SMEs.
  • Photonic Integrated Circuits, Sensors and Networks (PIXNET). Total budget 3,684M Euro, Aston part ~ 1M Euro. Coordinated by Scuola Superiore Sant’ Anna (Pisa, Italy) and including Aston University (Dr. S. Sygletos, Professor A. Ellis, Professor S. Turitsyn), Technische University Eindhoven and Osaka University aims at the education of MSc students in design, implementation and application of innovative integrated devices based on photonic technologies. Industrial partners of PIXNET include Ericsson KDDI R&D Laboratories (Japan) and 17 other companies.

Both projects will start in 2018, following the completion of negotiations with the Erasmus team.
