Personal profile

Biography

I studied Chemical engineering at the University of Barcelona. After graduating in 2006 I carried out my Master’s degree in Experimental Chemical Engineering (2007) with the Consolidated research group of Applied Catalysis and Kinetics of the University of Barcelona and subsequently obtained my PhD with excellent cum laude at the same university with the same research group (2012).

After obtaining my PhD I took on undergraduate teaching as an Assistant Professor being a member of the Teaching improvement and innovation group of Chemical reaction engineering at the University of Barcelona.

In 2013, I joined the University of Huddersfield as a postdoctoral researcher in the group of Dr Gareth Parkes being involved in characterisation of porous materials by adsorption microcalorimetry. In September of 2014 I started my academic post as lecturer in Chemical Engineering being involved in the development of the new Chemical Engineering course and teaching Chemical Reaction Engineering modules.

In January 2016 I joined Aston University as a Lecturer in Chemical Engineering. Currently I am a Senior Lecturer in Chemical Engineering and Deputy Head of the Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry Department.

Research Interests

My research area has largely focused on heterogeneous porous materials to catalyse reactions producing biofuels and chemicals from biomass feedstocks and biorefinery streams. I have expertise in reaction engineering, heterogeneous catalysis, kinetic modeling, porous material characterisation, and the design and start-up of experimental continuous and batch reactor devices.

My research area is focused in the development of catalysts for industry, from catalyst synthesis to close-to-operational testing in two important areas of chemical engineering: green chemistry and sustainability.

Teaching Activity

I am Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and a committee member of the Education Specialist Group from the IChemE.

My area of expertise is Chemical Engineering of reaction. I am involved in the modules of Reaction Engineering for second year: the Advanced Project design for Final years and the Industrial Catalysis for MEng year. In addition, I supervise design projects and research projects for the Chemical Engineering Degree.

PhD Supervision

Currently supervising a Ph.D. in catalytic pre-treatment of biomass and co-supervising a Ph.D. student on catalysis.

Membership of Professional Bodies

Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2018 (SFHEA).

Associate Member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (AMIChemE)

Committee member of Education Specialist group of IChemE (EdSIG-IChemE)
