David J Carpenter was educated at Hanley Castle and the University of Leeds. On graduation, he joined a firm of Chartered Accountants, qualifying in 1980. Subsequently, he took a double First in Mathematics, a Masters in Mathematics, and became a Master of Laws. He has published journal articles and presented papers in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, and Continental Europe: some of which went on to win prizes.
He has been Visiting Professor at Western-Illinois University, a Visiting Lecturer at Emirates Aviation University College, and acted as Chair and Referee for European Accounting Association and British Accounting Association Conferences. He has acted as External Examiner for the Universities of Leeds and Hull. He joined the School of Engineering & Applied Science in 2000.
