Bring Your Own Devices

 The University provides limited access to the Campus network for personal devices, however it is worth noting that there are a number of risks with connecting non University owned devices to the Campus Network and all attempts must be made to reduce these risks. The advice below is 'Best Practice' advice which will help to reduce these risks.

  • When using Mobile phones / Tablet devices, always secure the device by activating the Device Lock code (4 Digit pin or complex password)
  • Ensure the 'Automatic device lock on idle' option is enabled so the device automatically locks when not being used.
  • Ensure the 'Remote Device Wipe' option is enabled so the device can be remotely wiped in the event of Loss / Theft.
  • Ensure a level of Encryption is activated on the device.
  • Always ensure the device is fully updated with the latest IOS / Security updates
  • Do not attempt to circumvent the IOS protection by using methods such as 'Jailbreaking' or 'Rooting' as this often leaves the device vulnerable to attack.
  • Always ensure an up to date Anti Virus / Malware solution is installed and active on your device at all times. 
  • Before transferring any files onto the device, check that you are not breaching any Data Protection Laws or other legislation.
  • Always download 'Apps' from well known App websites i.e Itunes / Google Play  
  • Make sure the wireless network you are connecting to is known and trusted. 'Open Wireless Access' points should be avoided.
  • When installing new 'Apps' always read the Terms and Conditions to ensure that you know exactly what you are agreeing to and that additional 'Adware' or 'Spyware' is not being installed as default.   
  • All Lost or stolen devices which may have University related data should be reported to the Digital Services IT Helpdesk.
