Home Software

Aston University has in place a number of special license agreements with specific software manufacturers to allow students to use their software on their personal devices.  This page gives details of those softwares and how to obtain them.

Antivirus Software

If you are working on a personal device and transferring files or documents to the university network then we ask that you have reasonable protection against viruses. For Microsoft Windows users we recommend that you have Microsoft Security Essential installed. This is a free download available from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials.

Microsoft Office Pro Plus and Microsoft Web Apps

Through our educational agreements with Microsoft we are now able to provide you with access to Microsoft Office Pro Plus. This will allow you to install the full office suite on your on up to five devices and also  install the mobile versions of the applications on your phone or tablet.  There are also  web versions of office applications which can be used from any modern web browser.

Details on installing the software on your own computer or laptop can be found here.

Access to the software is available at https://portal.office.com.

Important Notes about this addition:

  • Data stored on OneDrive for Business is not stored at Aston University or backed up, and should not be used for Important or Confidential file storage. Aston ITS cannot locate or retrieve lost, deleted or corrupted files from OneDrive for Business. Your OneDrive will be deleted when your Aston account is removed after leaving the university.
  • Adding files to the “Shared with Everyone” folder will make that file accessible by everyone at Aston. Please do not add files to this folder that you do not want to be visible to all other staff and students.

Through an extension of the university license both staff and students are permitted to purchase a perpetual license (does not expire) for Endnote at a greatly reduced rate.  This is compatible with both Mac and Windows.

You can purchase a student version of the software here.

Important: Having ordered the software a copy of your Student ID is required to prove eligibility. Send either a photo or scan of your uniCARD to [email protected] quoting your order number.

A useful guide called 'The Little EndNote How-To Book' is available to download here.

Endnote (Online)

As an alternative to purchasing Endnote there is an online service available. You can register for the service at https://www.myendnoteweb.com/EndNoteWeb.html
Just select the 'institutional login' link towards the bottom of the page to get started.

Students wishing to install Mathematica will need a Wolfram ID to obtain the software. If you don't have one then follow the link to the Wolfram portal and create one.  Please note: You must use your Aston e-mail address when registering for your Wolfram ID.

Once you have created a Wolfram ID, please use the link below to obtain the software and license.

The University Matlab license now allows students to install Matlab on their personal computers.  The installation is done via the internet so you will need an active internet connection.  The installation is also very large (several gigabytes) so we would recommend not using a mobile broadband connection, unless it is unlimited.
