Operating Systems

Supported Operating Systems

Windows:      Windows 10 &  Windows 7 with Service Pack 2

OS X:           10.10 (Yosemite) and above
Ubuntu:        14.04 LTS & 12.04 LTS

Earlier versions of the ones listed no longer receive security updates from the manufacturers and therefore are no longer supported.  However, IT Services will continue to support these legacy operating systems on a best endeavor basis*, but we recommend upgrading these as soon as possible.

Please Note: support for Windows XP ended on 8th April 2014, and Microsoft no longer provides automatic fixes, updates, or online technical assistance. As such the OS is more vulnerable to security risks and IT Services can no longer allow this to be connected to the network. If there is a specific requirement for controlling legacy equipment then we will make arrangements for it to join an isolated network.

Windows 8

Support for the Windows 8 operating system is currently limited to accessing University services (such as Wi-Fi and VPN) from personally owned devices. The University will not be moving its standard Windows operating system to Windows 8 until the relevant testing, training and system enhancements have been completed. Until such time, IT Services continue to recommend the use of Windows 7 and devices that support Windows 7.

Office Applications

Supported Office Applications

Microsoft Office 2013 and Office 2016 including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, OneNote, Publisher, Project (32 Bit versions).

This list of Office Applications are included as part of the University's Microsoft agreement, which is maintained by IT Services, and as such can be installed on any university-owned device.  Other Office applications such as Visio can be purchased as individual licenses using the Microsoft Select agreement, which is also maintained by IT Services.

Office 365, including Office Mobile

This is a cloud-based service offered by Microsoft which provides access to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint via the internet.

Client Software

The table below lists the common software available to all staff within the University.

IT Services have implemented a new method to deploy Windows software to staff.  We are now able to advertise different software packages to staff either globally (Public Advert) or to a specific group (Private Advert).

If you would like a piece of software installed that is available by a public advert you can install it yourself.  If the software is available by private advert you will need to e-mail the IT Helpdesk so that the advert can be pushed to your PC.  Once you see the advert you will be able to install the software yourself.  The software listed as a request by e-mail will need to be installed by a member of IT Services staff either remotely or in person.

If you would like more details on how to obtain software for use on your personal PC you can view our Software for Home page.

If you require any additional software on your work PC or any of the Teaching room PCs then please contact the IT Helpdesk [email protected]
