Our research outcomes deliver on our strategic aim to ‘improve well-being across the lifespan and contribute to public policy and economic prosperity’ through our collective focus on translation and impact.

We specialise in four key multidisciplinary themes of cellular and molecular biomedicine, health and disease across the lifespan, clinical and systems neuroscience, and vision, cognition, and language.  

We are home to one of Aston’s four research institutes, three centres of excellence, and seven research groups. Our research groups link directly with our five schools of study; the School of Biosciences, Aston Medical School, School of Optometry, Aston Pharmacy School, and School of Psychology, ensuring our research is fed directly into teaching, providing our students with access to the latest findings, trends, and thinking in the field.  

Our work has been internationally recognised:

  • 100% of our research environment has been ranked as being at least internationally excellent, with 50% being world-leading
  • 81.3% of our impact is at least internationally excellent, with 43.8% being world leading 
  • 83.2% of our publications are at least internationally excellent, with 23.5% being world leading 
  • We are ranked 10th in the UK for research in Allied Health Professionals in terms of Research Power (a measure of the volume of research multiplied by quality of research)
