Iron Deficiency Anaemia, Cognitive Function and Brain Activation

In collaboration with the Neuroimaging group at Aston, we have found that, when performing a task of sustained attention, frontal lobe activation in the gamma band is decreased in iron deficient anaemics, compared to non anaemics. An example of this is shown opposite:

This helps to neuroanatomically localise the commonly found cognitive performance deficits associated with anaemia.
