Vascular Imaging and Research Laboratory

Regulatory ultrasound

We are the first UK laboratory dedicated to investigating the role of both systemic and ocular circulation in the onset and progression of ocular and syemic vascular disease. We also provide personalised risk assessment for early detection of cardiovascular disease risk.

By using the eye as a 'window' to the vascular health of the human body, we look for risk factors associated with the onset and/or progression of diseases such as coronary heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Our main research interests are:

  • Systemic and ocular circulation in health and disease
  • Endothelial dysfunction (clinical and laboratory markers)
  • Autonomic nervous system functionality
  • Ageing and vascular health
  • Obesity, sleep diseases and endothelial function
  • Screening for cardiovascular risk in obese adolescents
  • Alzheimer disease: ocular circulation and endothelial function
  • Alzheimer's disease: vision correction and cognitive function
  • Ethnic differences in ocular circulation/endothelial function
  • Circadian rhythms in human circulation
  • Oxidative stress in ocular diseases
