Chair in Ophthalmology
School of Life & Health Sciences Aston University Birmingham, B4 7ET
I am a practising ophthalmic surgeon with a specialist interest in cataract surgery. I have academic interests in physiological optics, visual perception and psychophysics. My particular interest is in the human perception of polarized light and the interaction of polarized light with the eye. This has led to a fruitful collaboration with the Aston School of Life & Health Sciences.
I trained in medicine at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School, London (now Imperial School of Medicine) where I later taught human anatomy. My postgraduate ophthalmology training was in Oxford, Moorfields Eye Hospital (London) and Birmingham where I held my first consultant appointment. It was as this time in the 1990s that I began my academic collaboration with the Vision Sciences Department at Aston University. Moving from Birmingham, I was appointed to my present post of Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Warwick Hospital in 1997. For several years I collaborated with Warwick University Laboratory of Optical Engineering in projects including a digital ophthalmoscope and applications of polarization optics to ophthalmic diagnosis.
