Representatives from Partner institutions visited European partners in October/November to finalise the first phase of the project and initiate the second phase.   The results of the needs analysis and information-gathering about current practices in language teacher education showed a gap in three main areas:

  1. Practical approaches to language teacher education. Analysis of current curricula  and the results of a questionnaire for secondary school teachers showed that, while the theoretical grounding that they are given in their current programmes is excellent, there is a need for more explicit input into how the theory can be realised in practice.
  2. Using new technologies – this more recent aspect of language teaching is missing from many current curricula and teachers felt strongly that it should be included.
  3. Language improvement. Teachers expressed a wish to go aboard to improve their language skills. Such innovation is not possible in the current project, but it was decided to introduce language improvement modules in the new MA programme. 

As a result of this input and of the discussions that took place at Aston, Caen and Freiburg, the following list of modules will be developed:

  1. Practical Teaching Skills (Methodology)
  2. Appropriate Language Pedagogy
  3. Curriculum Design and Evaluation
  4. Technology and Language Teaching
  5. Language Improvement for teachers in English, French and German. 

Module writing teams will be formed with a module leader from one of the partner institutions and at least one team member from each partner country, together with a member from an EU institution. The next steps in actually designing and writing the modules will be the focus of a 2-week mobility to Freiburg in January 2015.    

Sue Garton visited Tyumen State University from 9th-14th December. TSU is the Coordinating university for the partner countries and the purpose of Sue’s visit was threefold: to meet the full TEMPUS project team at TSU; to undertake some teacher training in new language teaching methodologies as part of the project and to take part in a conference of graduate employability with 100 delegates from all over Russia.
