Brief outline of PhD research
I used a linguistic ethnography framework, combining linguistic micro analysis of recorded post observation feedback meetings between English language teachers and their supervisors with ethnographic data looking at the institutional context and participants' perspectives to investigate the construction and negotiation of identity and face in institutional talk.
Why did you choose to study for your PhD in the School of Languages and Social Sciences?
Because I wanted Fiona Copland to be my supervisor. I had read her work on face in feedback with interest and I knew she had the knowledge and expertise in my chosen area of study that I would need.
What did you find most useful about the PhD programme?
My supervisor, Fiona Copland. She was warm, approachable and interested in my research questions and data. She knew about post observation feedback and face and introduced me to linguistic ethnography. She gave me excellent guidance and advice while allowing me to find my own way through my data. I was very lucky to have such an excellent supervisor.
How has your PhD helped you in your current occupation?
I was given my job on the strength of being a current PhD student with the understanding that I would complete within 2 years of employment, which I did.
