Brief outline of PhD research
My research was ‘Developing a pedagogical framework for teaching Chinese aspect markers le, guo, zai and zhe --- a comparative study of the Grammar-Translation approach and a communicative approach’. It aimed at exploring whether a specific teaching framework assists the learning of Chinese aspect markers by L2 learners.
Why did you choose to study for your PhD in the School of Languages and Social Sciences?
The LSS offered full administrating and academic support including training courses for research students and regular meetings with the supervisor. The learning environment in LSS was friendly and inspirational.
What did you find most useful about the PhD programme?
The experience not only allowed me to gain insight into linguistics and second language education, but also made me grow from a novice in research to a thinker with broader views.
How has your PhD helped you in your current occupation?
I have received an offer to teach MA translation course at Birmingham University.
