I am currently Lecturer in Intercultural Communication and Coordinator for Intercultural Competence Training at the Georg-August-University Göttingen Germany, and independent trainer for Intercultural Competence.
Brief outline of PhD research
My study provides an in-depth analysis of the inpatriate (i.e. foreign nationals who are relocated to an organisation's domestic headquarters) experience and examines to what extent it is shaped by both the new national culture and the unfamiliar corporate culture. Exploring the specific roles and functions of inpatriates I argue the case for effective, tailor-made intercultural training which includes preparation for the relevant corporate culture.
Why did you choose to study for your PhD in the School of Languages and Social Sciences?
I was already a member of staff when I started my PhD. I knew the programme would be suitable for me and that the right kind of expertise was available at that school.
What did you find most useful about the PhD programme?
The most useful thing about the PhD programme was the very good and intensive supervision.
How has your PhD helped you in your current occupation?
Without my PhD it would never have been possible for me to get a permanent position at a German University.
