Judi joined the Department as Lecturer in Politics and International Relations in September 2018. Her research is located on the interface between Political Theory and British Politics, with a particular focus on rhetoric, ideology and the performance of leadership. She recently completed a British Academy/Leverhulme-funded project on the rhetorical dynamics of unity and distinctiveness within the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition, the findings of which are published in her book Conflict, Co-operation and the Rhetoric of Coalition Government (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018). Judi’s current research explores the rhetoric of Britishness in the Queen’s Christmas message since 1952.
Before coming to Aston, Judi was Senior Lecturer in Politics at Coventry University (2014-18), Research Fellow in British Politics at the University of Leeds (2011-2014) and Research Assistant on the Leverhulme Trust-funded project ‘How the Leader Speaks: British Political Rhetoric and Argumentation’ at Swansea University (2008-2011). She is Secretary of the Rhetoric and Politics Specialist Group of the UK Political Studies Association, co-manager of the website www.britishpoliticalspeech.org and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
