Biography

I joined the Department of Sociology and Policy at Aston University in September 2015. Prior to that, I was a researcher at the University of Oxford, working at the Oxford Programme for the Future of Cities within the School of Anthropology & Museum Ethnography

I completed my PhD in Sociology at The University of Manchester in 2011. The title of my dissertation was “Gentrification and Belonging in Istanbul”, and it explored the ways in which urban policies, gentrification, and socio-economic policies impact the class composition, housing, and patterns of belonging of different social classes. After completing my PhD, I went on to focus on the impact of urban policies on property rights of different groups in Istanbul, Turkey, in my post-doctoral research project.

Currently I am working on two research projects: 1- The EU-funded (H2020) project ‘Cultural Heritage and Identities of Europe’s Future’ (CHIEF; www.chiefproject.eu ). 2- Cultural Consumption and Cultural Participation among Turkish, Kurdish and Cypriot Populations in the UK (BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants)

Research Interests

As a researcher, I am interested in a wide range of topics, including social and economic inequality, the relationship between social class and social-symbolic borders, gentrification and social-spatial exclusion, cultural sociology, cultural participation, sociology of youth and education, gender inequality, and migration. In my work, I use both quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods, with a particular interest in ethnographic research methods and multiple correspondence analysis
