Aston University to hold online celebrations for graduates

  • Aston University welcomes latest graduates into its alumni community
  • Online events taking place on 7 April using hashtag #virtualAstonGrads
  • Graduates to be offered opportunity to attend a future ceremony when COVID-19 threat has passed.

Aston University will be holding online celebrations on 7 April to welcome its most recent graduates into its alumni community.

Last month the University made the decision to cancel its physical spring graduation ceremonies, normally held at Town Hall Birmingham, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aston University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alec Cameron, will be joining other academics and members of staff in making congratulatory video messages to share across the University’s social networks.

As part of the day’s activities, the University will be asking new graduates - wherever they are in the world - to share pictures or videos of themselves in their graduation outfits with the hashtag #virtualAstonGrads.

There will also be opportunities to win prizes, connect with classmates and other alumni and to find out about the benefits of being a member of the Aston University alumni community.

Kerrie Holland, director of supporter engagement and operations, said:

“We know people will be disappointed not to be able to attend their graduation ceremony on 7 April as planned, but we still wanted a way of welcoming our spring 2020 cohort of graduates into our global community of over 95,000 alumni.

“Graduates will be offered an opportunity to attend an alternative ceremony once the threat of COVID-19 is over. In the meantime, we hope that this raises a smile during what is, for us all, a difficult and troubling time.”
