The M5 group of Midlands research-intensive universities has launched a new website which includes a searchable database detailing each piece of equipment that can be shared across all its members.
The M5 Group of universities – Aston, Nottingham, Birmingham, Leicester, Loughborough and Warwick– was established to boost research collaboration and improve sharing of equipment between the Institutions.
The group is developing the tools needed to make such sharing work in future and hope this will lead to greater access of specialist equipment and future collaborations.
The new searchable online database includes details of the equipment that can be shared, its location and contact details for more information and to make any bookings.
Each M5 university now has an effective register detailing each piece of equipment that can be shared. The M5 group is also beginning to explore if it can take such equipment sharing further into jointly procuring maintenance and servicing contacts.
DrPhil Extance Pro Vice Chancellor for Business Partnerships & Knowledge Transfer at Aston and M5 Board Member said:
“We’re delighted that Aston is now part of the M5 group, and that the launch of this website will allow easy access to a detailed database of equipment. Research councils have been keen to see greater collaboration between universities, and in particular the use of research equipment. This group and its associated new website can only serve to strengthen the position of the M5 group of universities in the future."
