The Aston University Professional Mentoring Scheme 2012/2013 has proved another year of great success allowing undergraduates to gain real life business and career advice.
The Professional Mentoring Scheme Awards, held at the Aston Business School Conference Centre celebrated the achievements of both the second- year students and their mentors.
The scheme, now in its third year, matches undergraduates with business professionals. 110 business executives from 76 companies were involved in mentoring students, including; Accenture, Barclays, BMW, Capgemini, Deutsche Bank, Goodyear Dunlop Tyres UK Ltd,KPMG, Marks & Spencer, McCann Erickson, NEC Group, Pinewood Technologies, Lloyds Banking Group, TUI Travel and many successful SMEs.
Professor Helen Higson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor welcomed guests with Dr Patrick Tissington, Associate dean of Business Partnerships who presented the winners of the Mentor/ Mentee of the Year with their awards. The categories received over 30 nominations.
The winners were Paul Ellis from Deutsche Bank, an Aston alumnus who studied BSc Accounting for Management, and Mentee winner, student Lewis Boot, International Business and Management.
Professor Helen Higson, said;“We are grateful for the brilliant support business executives give to Aston student in helping them through to securing prestigious work placements. It was wonderful to hear a lot of interesting stories between mentors and mentees.”
Lewis Boot, International Business and Management student, the winner of Mentee of the Year, said; “It was an honour to work alongside my mentor, Ron Whitfield, and I would like to say a massive thank you to him for all of his hard work and time spent with me over the course of the scheme. This scheme has given me an invaluable insight into the business world of work and professional skills. I would strongly recommend the professional mentoring scheme to all Aston students.”
Paul Ellis from Deutsche Bank, the winner of Mentor of the Year said; “I was glad to be able to offer help and advice Including CV presentation and interview techniques. I was very touched that I even got nominated for Mentor of the Year and the scheme for me also felt like I was giving something back.”
The scheme has received positive feedback from mentors and mentees alike;
Rachel Mountford, Marks & Spencer said; “I found mentoring very rewarding. I was able to advise on placement search and CV writing and key skills that will help people to excel in the workplace and also in interview situations. I am so proud that in the end my mentee was able to secure a work placementwith Williams F1.”
Mischa Hunt, Business and Management said; “The Professional Mentoring Scheme has given me an opportunity to gain some fantastic industry advice and information that I do not receive in lectures. Most of all it has given me confidence in applications and interviews.”
The awards were sponsored and supported by Marks & Spencer and several local businesses; AnneXe, Hush Hair & Beauty, Rodizio Rico, the Karczma, and Urban Coffee Company.
The Professional Mentoring Scheme is one strand of the University’s larger Mentoring Scheme, and is managed by the Business Partnerships Team of Aston Business School. The scheme is also aimed at supporting business professionals in their own development and to provide a platform in developing their business networks.
