The guide, which takes into account a range of 13 key performance indicators, allows the THE to ‘produce the most comprehensive global university rankings in the world’.
The rankings employ a methodology which measures a range of factors including the diversity of the university student body and the extent to which its academics collaborate with international colleagues. This includes the proportion of research papers published with a co-author from at least one other country.
Aston is engaged in numerous international research partnerships, including a recent 2.3m euro link-up between the Aston Research Centre for Healthy Ageing team and European colleagues from Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland. They will focus on combatting frailty and cognitive decline.
In 2013, the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AIPT) entered into a formal partnership with Novosibirsk State University (NSU) in Russia to develop the latest laser and photonic technology. The two institutions, who are world innovators in the fields of optical communications and fibre optics, formed the Aston-NSU International Centre for Photonics as part of their affiliation.
Professor Helen Higson, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Aston University, said:“Having a strong international reputation is essential if we are to continue recruiting the best academic staff, attracting the brightest students and producing collaborative research that impacts upon real world issues. We are happy to be recognised as an inclusive, global institution and we will strive to further develop international relations with future and current partners around the world.”
In addition to strong international research partnerships, Aston's student body also has a strong international outlook, welcoming students from over 130 countries to its campus - including undergraduates from Ghana, China and India.
