LOCSU appoints Aston undergraduate as ambassador

Hassnain Safdar

Tuesday 5 July

As the first ever student ambassador for  the  Local Optical Committee Support Unit (LOCSU), an Aston undergraduate will form  closer links with student optometrists and identify future leaders for the sector.

Aston Optometry undergraduate, Hassnain Safdar, will take on his new role as LOCSU student ambassador after graduation this summer. The Unit is one that supports Local Optical Committees across England in improving local eye health services. LOCSU also helps community optometrists and opticians with local commissioners to make community eye services easily accessible for patients.

This appointment is one that will increase interaction and understanding between the Unit and students and pre-reg optometrists. Hassnain’s role is pivotal for LOCSU to establish opportunities for new optometrists in identifying and nurturing them as future leaders of the profession.

Hassnain, said:  “I feel privileged to be the first ever LOCSU Pre-reg Ambassador. Quite often, students are solely focused on the clinical aspects of their studies and upon graduation, have a very limited view (if any) on the world of Optometry after University. I am pleased that LOCSU recognises this need and I am looking forward to working with universities in England in the next academic year.”

During his time at Aston, Hassnain has keenly engaged in extra-curricular activities, showcasing his diverse skillset. From chairing the  Model UN Society, engaging with world leaders, as well as furthering his knowledge within the field of Optometry. As the current Co-Chairman of the Central Region United Nations Association UK (UNA-UK), Hassnain recently chaired the French Cabinet at the Model United Nations conference in Nice (MUNICE). With students from around the world, he attended to debate issues regarding the refugee crisis, the ongoing conflict in Syria and the international threat of ISIS.

He continues: “Aston has convinced me that attending university is more than just gaining a degree, it was a worthy investment with memories I will cherish for the rest of my life!”

Hassnain will be graduating from Aston this summer and will begin his pre-registration year with Specsavers in July.
