13 February 2017

  • Leading UK car industry expert and media commentator talks Brexit and the implications for industrial policy in his inaugural lecture for Aston University.
  • Public lecture free to attend on Tuesday, 14 March at 18:30 (17:30 for refreshments).

The automotive industry has been one of the ‘star performers’ of the UK economy in recent years – but what does the future hold post-Brexit?

Leading UK car industry expert and media commentator Professor David Bailey will give his inaugural lecture considering the short run impacts leaving the EU might have on the sector, before turning to the impact of uncertainty on foreign investment and the nature of what a future trade deal might look like.

He will argue that there is a need for a renewed industrial policy to support UK auto and manufacturing, and will offer some reflections on the government’s recent Industrial Strategy Green Paper.

Professor David Bailey is a highly influential expert on economic restructuring and industrial policy and provides his unrivalled insight into the sector regularly on local, national and international written and broadcast media. He has provided articles and commentary on key economic and regional policy issues including the closure and eventual reopening of the MG Rover car plant in Birmingham and the Jaguar Land Rover economic success story.

The lecture is open to members of the public and tickets are free of charge. Details on the event are below:

  • When: Tuesday, 14 March 2017. 18:30–20:00. Refreshments from 17:30.
