Midlands innovation

Midlands Innovation brings together eight research intensive universities in the Midlands (Aston, Birmingham, Cranfield, Keele, Leicester, Loughborough, Nottingham and Warwick). The Midlands Innovation partnership is led by the eight Vice-Chancellors who meet regularly as the Midlands Innovation Board. The group created the first regional equipment database in the UK, which continues today. The University PVCs also are key players in striving for Midlands Innovation goals to be met. Since 2015 the group has broadened the nature of its partnership to encompass cutting-edge research, innovation and training/skills development. This wider ambition builds on a large number of collaborations existing between the partners in aim to build global hubs of research and innovation excellence across the Midlands region and beyond. The Midlands Engine for Growth is a government initiative, aiming to raise the long-term growth rate of the region, create hundreds of thousands of new jobs and add £34 billion to its economy by 2030. Midlands Innovation is a partnership to help drive this vision.

The Energy Research Accelerator is an example of an MI driven project, our partners combined with the BGS tackling some of the biggest global energy challenges. It involves creating a world leading hub of energy talent, technology research, development and deployment, based on the academic expertise and industrial heritage of the Midlands. The government awarded the project £60 million towards its vision of reducing the UK’s dependence of imported energy, making better use of primary resources and helping achieves the UK’s carbon reduction targets.

By pooling our individual expertise, equipment and resources and most importantly people, we present a compelling offer for national and international investment and help drive regional growth. Individually we are strong, with world-class research, creativity and skills development. Together we are stronger, playing a significant role in stimulating economic growth across the region and beyond.
