The Research Excellence Framework uses a framework of assessment to consider research outputs, the impact of research and the research environment. Assessments are conducted by panels of experts taken from the academic community, industry and the wider user community. Panels agree a “quality profile” for each element of the submission (outputs, impact and environment) and these profiles are then combined to form an overall quality profile.
