Product Design Enterprise Scholarship

Watch Dr Timothy Whitehead introduce the Product Design Enterprise Scholarship, a new scholarship for entrepreneurial students in product design

It is hard to avoid awareness of plastic pollution throughout the world. With an estimated 8 million tonnes dumped into oceans every year, which chokes out wildlife, there is an urgent need to provide global solutions to this crisis.

Aston University is offering a 25% scholarship to a student who demonstrates that they have the potential to be entrepreneurial in the area of product design. The Product Design Enterprise Scholarship is a 25% reduction in tuition fees for 4 years. It is open to all qualified applicants for our new undergraduate course beginning September 2020 – MSci Design, Enterprise and Innovation.

As a designer, it is your task to respond to this global challenge and create a product solution which can either: reduce the use of plastic packaging, use plastic waste in an innovative way to create new products, or provide solutions to take plastic waste out of rivers and oceans.

Your design should focus on one of these areas and be:

  • innovative
  • feasible
  • entrepreneurial

To apply for the scholarship, complete the form below and upload a short video (2-3 minutes) presenting a design idea that makes a positive impact on plastics use. The closing date for applications is 31 January 2020.

If you have a question about the scholarship or design idea, please email Dr Timothy Whitehead.

Product Design Enterprise Scholarship Terms and Conditions

1. Introduction

1.1 Aston University (“the University”) has introduced the Product Design Enterprise Scholarship Scheme (“the Scholarship”).

1.2 The Scholarship is for a place to study on the MSci Design, Enterprise and Innovation Programme (“the Programme”) at the University, commencing in September 2020. This is an undergraduate integrated master’s programme with a duration of 4 years.

1.3 The Scholarship is subject to the terms and conditions set out in this document.

2. Terms and Conditions

2.1 In order to be eligible to receive the Scholarship, students must satisfy the terms and conditions set out in this clause 2.

2.2 The Scholarship is open to all UK, EU and International students who wish to apply for the Programme at the University for entry in September 2020.

2.3 The Scholarship will be awarded to a student who:

       2.3.1 holds a current offer from the University (as at 31 January 2020) to study the Programme at the University which will commence in September 2020;

       2.3.2 has not previously been enrolled on any Aston programme;

       2.3.3 has met all of the conditions set out in their offer letter;

       2.3.4 has attained the appropriate IELTS (if applicable) prior to commencing the Programme; and

       2.3.5 is not an existing student on any other undergraduate programme at the University

2.4 The Scholarship will be awarded up to the value of 25% of the tuition fees payable for each academic year of the Programme up to 4 years. The Scholarship will be awarded as a reduction in academic tuition fees. No cash alternative is available.

2.5 The Scholarship is valid for the Programme commencing in the academic year 2020/21 only and cannot be carried forward (deferred) to another academic year.

2.6 Students are required to confirm that any material submitted as part of the competition is their own work and does not infringe any intellectual property rights of a third party.

2.7 Competition entries must be from individuals only, not teams.

2.8 If a student fails to respond to any shortlisting emails within allotted time frames, the application will be rendered void. As such, students will be withdrawn from the shortlist.

2.9 Scholarship entitlement will be approved before the commencement of the students Programme. It is not possible to consider a student for the Scholarship once the Programme has commenced.

2.10 The scholarship holder will be required to become an Enterprise Ambassador of the University. This means taking part in promotional activities such as attending University open days and participating in promotional videos

2.11 The scholarship holder will be subject to the University’s rules and regulations applicable to the Programme, and the Terms and Conditions of Enrolment.

2.12 The decision of the University to award the Scholarship will be final. Reasons for being unsuccessful will not be provided. Students may appeal against the decision only if they can show that there has been a procedural error. Appeals should be addressed to the Director of Student and Academic Services.

3. Termination of the Scholarship and Leave of Absence

3.1 The University reserves the right to terminate the Scholarship where a student is in breach of any of these terms and conditions, or, if any information provided to the University as part of the Scholarship application, is found to be false or missing any offer. In such circumstances the student will be liable for any tuition fees incurred.

3.2 The Scholarship will only be available to students who have been in attendance, as defined by the University, throughout term one and term two and are still in attendance at the start of term three of each academic year of their programme. Students who withdraw from the University part way through the academic year will not be eligible to receive the Scholarship for that year.

3.3 In the event a student suspends their studies and takes a full year leave of absence for the complete academic year (i.e. October- October) no tuition fee will be charged and, therefore, the student will not be eligible to receive the Scholarship in that academic year.

3.4 Students who suspend their studies part way through an academic year and take a leave of absence will be eligible to receive the Scholarship on a pro rata basis for the academic terms they have completed in full. When a student resumes their studies following a leave of absence, part way through an academic year, students will only be eligible to receive the Scholarship on a pro rata basis for the terms they are due to complete in full. The amount of Scholarship will be approved on a pro rata basis and in line with Aston University’s Tuition Fees Charging Policy.

4. Ineligibility

4.1 Students who have all or part of their fees paid by a sponsor will not be eligible for the Scholarship unless the sponsor has entered into a separate agreement with the University. Sponsors include, but are not limited to, Her Majesty’s UK Government, the student’s home government or another nation’s government, the British Council or any international organisation, any international company, or any other university.

4.2 A student will be ineligible to receive the Scholarship in full or in part if, at the time the Scholarship is due to be made, the student is in debt to the University. For the purposes of this clause 4.2 a student will be in debt to the University if they have received a third notice stating that a payment is overdue.

4.3 Students who are replacing their studies for whatsoever reason are not eligible for the Scholarship.
