Supporting sustainable travel
Aston University actively supports sustainable travel and was recently accredited for its sustainable travel plan by Modeshift stars to support the city of Birmingham’s 2030 net-zero target and the aim to reduce the number of cars travelling into the city centre.
Benefits of sustainable travel
- Using public transport reduces the congestion and pollution caused by driving into the city centre, improving air quality and quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
- Travelling by active modes such as walking and cycling is good for your health and is great way to incorporate exercise into your daily routine.
- Save money – sustainable travel options are a great way to save money on your commute. With the rising cost in fuel, considering options that reduce fuel consumption can save you money in the long term.
Different options for travelling to campus

- Travelling by bicycle
Aston University offers a range of support from buying a bike to using shower facilities on site. Visit the Aston Bicycle User Group for more details.

If you don't own a bike you may consider:
Beryl bikes that are stationed near stations and our campus. Brompton Bike Hire have installed a cycle locker on campus by the South Wing taxi rank. Staff, students and members of the public can rent a bicycle on a daily basis and leave it in any Brompton cycle locker around Birmingham (or throughout the UK). Further details can be found on their website, which includes the annual membership and daily rental rates. Registering for the Cycle to Work scheme to help spread the cost of a new bike over 12 tax-free instalments.
- Travelling by foot
Consider if you can walk all or part way to work. Plan your journey using Google maps.
- Travelling by public transport
By bus
Use the journey planner to help find an alternative route around the West Midlands.
Numerous buses stop at Aston University.
By train
If you’re planning on travelling by train, timetable information is available from National Rail.
There are 3 train stations within a 10-15 minute radius from campus; Birmingham New Street, Snow Hill and Moor Street.
By tram
West Midlands Metro is currently running from Wolverhampton to Birmingham with extensions underway.
- Travelling by electric scooter
Electric scooters only use a small amount of electricity and do not emit emissions.
Beryl is a public e-scooter service, you can find more details here.
Private e-scooters are not permitted to be used on University premises, nor can they be charged on site.
- Car share
Consider if you can share the journey with colleagues. Use the ‘Go Green Aston’ group on Yammer to connect with colleagues across the university and arrange travel.
